Solar energy will be the cheapest source of energy in nearly all markets and locations because PV (photovoltaic) cells can bypass the aging and fragile electricity grid and deliver its power to the end user, fundamentally changing the underlying economics of energy. As the scale of PV production increases and costs continue to decline at historic rates, demand for PV electricity will outpace supply of systems for years to come. Yet, the shift from fossil fuels to solar energy will take place...

An experimental investigation of sub-wavelength imaging by a wire medium slab is performed. A complex-shaped near field source is used in order to test imaging performance of the device. It is demonstrated that the ultimate bandwidth of operation of the constructed imaging device is 4.5% that coincides with theoretical predictions [Phys. Rev. E 73, 056607 (2006)]. Within this band the wire medium slab is capable of transmitting images with \lambda/15 resolution irrespectively of the shape and...

We analyze the spectrum and properties of a highly-deconstructed Higgsless model with only three sites. Such a model contains sufficient complexity to incorporate interesting physics issues related to fermion masses and electroweak observables, yet remains simple enough that it could be encoded in a Matrix Element Generator program for use with Monte Carlo simulations. The gauge sector of this model is equivalent to that of the BESS model; the new physics of interest here lies in the fermion...

We follow up on our (Radhakrishnan & Deshpande, 2001: RD01) radically different interpretation of the observed structures and morphologies in the x-ray observations of the nebulae around young pulsars (PWNe). In our general model for PWNe (RD01), originally motivated by the Chandra observations of the Vela X-ray nebula, the bright arcs, the jet-like feature and the diffuse components in such nebulae can be explained together in detail, wherein the arcs are understood as traces of the...

We describe a system for long-distance distribution of quantum entanglement, in which coherent light with large average photon number interacts dispersively with single, far-detuned atoms or semiconductor impurities in optical cavities. Entanglement is heralded by homodyne detection using a second bright light pulse for phase reference. The use of bright pulses leads to a high success probability for the generation of entanglement, at the cost of a lower initial fidelity. This fidelity may be...

The Stern sequence (s(n)) is defined by s(0) = 0, s(1) = 1, s(2n) = s(n), s(2n+1) = s(n) + s(n+1). Stern showed in 1858 that gcd(s(n),s(n+1)) = 1, and that for every pair of relatively prime positive integers (a,b), there exists a unique n so that s(n) = a and s(n+1) = b. We show that, in a strong sense, the average value of s(n)/s(n+1) is 3/2, and that for all d, (s(n),s(n+1)) is uniformly distributed among all feasible pairs of congruence classes modulo d. More precise results are presented...

We study the quasiparticle band structure of isolated, infinite HF and HCl bent (zigzag) chains and examine the effect of the crystal field on the energy levels of the constituent monomers. The chains are one of the simplest but realistic models of the corresponding three-dimensional crystalline solids. To describe the isolated monomers and the chains, we set out from the Hartree-Fock approximation, harnessing the advanced Green's function methods "local molecular orbital algebraic...

We show that the diffusion of a single file of particles moving in a fluctuating modulated 1D channel is enhanced with respect to the one in a bald pipe. This effect, induced by the fluctuations of the modulation, is favored by the incommensurability between the channel potential modulation and the moving file periodicity. This phenomenon could be of importance in order to optimize the critical current in superconductors, in particular in the case where mobile vortices move in 1D channels...

We consider the problem of c-axis transport in double-layered cuprates, in particular with reference to Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+\delta}$ compounds. We exploit the effect of the two barriers on the thermal and tunnel transport. The resulting model is able to describe accurately the normal state c-axis resistivity in Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+\delta}$, from the underdoped side up to the strongly overdoped. We extend the model, without introducing additional parameters, in order to...

We develop a theory of a pseudogap state appearing near the superconductor-insulator transition in strongly disordered metals with attractive interaction. We show that such an interaction combined with the fractal nature of the single particle wave functions near the mobility edge leads to an anomalously large single particle gap in the superconducting state near SI transition that persists and even increases in the insulating state long after the superconductivity is destroyed. We give...

An algebraic approach to the neutrino propagation in dense media is presented. The Hamiltonian describing a gas of neutrinos interacting with each other and with background fermions is written in terms of the appropriate SU(N) operators, where N is the number of neutrino flavors. The evolution of the resulting many-body problem is formulated as a coherent-state path integral. Some commonly used approximations are shown to represent the saddle-point solution of the path integral for the full...

The scales associated with Brown-Teitelboim-Bousso-Polchinski processes of brane nucleation, which result in changes of the flux parameters and the number of D-branes, are discussed in the context of type IIB models with all moduli stabilized. It is argued that such processes are unlikely to be described by effective field theory.

We address conditional de-Gaussification of continuous variable states by inconclusive photon subtraction (IPS) and review in details its application to bipartite twin-beam state of radiation. The IPS map in the Fock basis has been derived, as well as its counterpart in the phase-space. Teleportation assisted by IPS states is analyzed and the corresponding fidelity evaluated as a function of the involved parameters. Nonlocality of IPS states is investigated by means of different tests including...

The present status of quantum electrodynamics (QED) theory of heavy few-electron ions is reviewed. The theoretical results are compared with available experimental data. A special attention is focused on tests of QED at strong fields and on determination of the fundamental constants. A recent progress on calculations of the QED corrections to the parity nonconserving 6s-7s transition amplitude in neutral Cs is also discussed.

Librivox recording of Silas Marner, by George Eliot. Read by rachelellen. Silas Marner (originally published in 1861): Betrayed by a beloved friend and accused of a crime he didn’t commit, awkward Silas Marner is expelled from his beloved religious community — the only community he has ever known. He exiles himself in the remote village of Raveloe. Friendless and without family, set apart from the villagers by their superstition and fear of him, he plies his weaving trade day after day,...

In this paper we use the diffuse Galactic synchrotron emission to study the properties of the Galactic magnetic field. We combined data from the low-frequency WENSS survey with single-dish observations carried out by Brouw and Spoelstra to (partially) fill in the central gap in the (u,v) plane that is missing from the interferometer data. The small bandwidth of the WENSS data meant that we could not determine rotation measures (RM) directly. Instead we interpreted the polarization angle...

As each day passes, babies' awareness of the world around them -- and all the wonders it holds -- continues to develop. Wild animals are especially intriguing and World Animals captures the spirit of little ones' fascination with wild creatures as it introduces them to animals living in the jungle, in the ocean, and on the savannah. These are animals that might be found in the zoo, but in this program, they are roaming free in their natural habitats. With a mesmerizing blend of exciting...
